Historiography Reflection

1. By conducting research it helped me understand that in order to be a historian you can't just pull things out of the air and even if you think you know something you should always check again to see if all your facts are straight.
2. I will remember all the things I learned about my school, the L.A. riots with Rodney King and that I should always do my research and make sure that my sources are reliable.
3. For next years class I would suggest nothing, I found this unit was just perfect. It was well balanced in the sense of how we used our time, what we were learning and the activites we did.

Los Angeles 1992 Riots

It was years after the civl rights movement had simmer down and it seemed like we were getting more and more used to the idea of equality everyday. EVen the modeling industry in America began to have high demands for non-white models. It certainly seemed like timers were changing and we were taking a step in the right direction. Or maybe not...
In 1992, taxi driver Rodney King was stopped and beaten by LAPD after being chased for speeding. Little did they realize they were being watched and recorded by someone not too far away in their apartment. The video was later sent in and broadcast around the world. The video shows four police officers brutally beating and striking a man while other officers stood by. It was said that parts of the video  show Mr. King attacking the officers which in actuality in no part of the video does this occur. Following the incident the four officers seen beating Mr. King in the video were tried in court and were all four acquitted. This sparked outrage amongst the civilians leading to what is known as the 1992 Los Angeles Riots lasting four days, causing approximately one billion dollars in damage and killing more than 50 people. It was said to be one of the most intense civil disturbances in the history of the United States.
Some may argue that the riots were purely caused by the incident itself and the brutality of it while others may argue that it was a combination of the shock that came along with the incident, people were tired of the years of racial profiling by the police and the high unemployment rates due to the nation wide recession

Tech Stuff

1. When I was younger and went to public school we didn't really have computers around. We had a computer lab and I got to play Oregon Trail every Wednesday if I behaved. I came to Punahou in the 6th grade and that was the first year that I ever incorporated computers with learning (to the extent where we were using them all the time and they were a constant learning tool). At my old schools we did not have projectors like we do at this school, my teachers would just write on the board and all our textbooks and assignments were on paper.

2. In the 7th grade we did a project entitled Project Citizens where we came up with a problem (depletion of fossil fuels) and came up with a solution ( alternative energies) once we finalized our public policy we presented in via powerpoint to a group of politicians and scholars.

3. I am familiar with Word, iTunes, iPhoto, Firefox, Safari, Powerpoint, Excel and Garageband.
